What does it mean to invoke?
Traditionally before a class, practice, or ritual, we chant invocational mantras. We do this for a couple of reasons.
To ask for help ~Ā When we're setting the stage for a successful practice, we call in helpful energies to aid in achieving whatever goal we set. For example, Ganesha helps to clear obstacles and gives us strength and courage. Sarasvati aligns us with our higher mind, giving us the ability to understand and integrate wisdom.
To create a receptive mind ~Ā Doing these mantrasĀ helps to shift our awareness from whatever was going on before, and bring us fully into this moment. It's a cue for the mind to step away from the clutter and fine tune to the frequency where the knowledge we're seeking lives.
Practicing invocational mantras is a powerfulĀ addition to any meditation/chanting practice or even to start your day.
If you've ever joined one ofĀ community practices, and wondered about the string of mantras at the beginning,Ā here is your opportunity to learn them!
