“May we hear the auspicious with our ears. May we see the auspicious with our eyes.”

The Gaṇapati Atharvaśīrṣa is a powerful text honoring Gaṇesha, the beloved elephant headed deity who is well-known for removing obstacles from our path.

Also known as the Gaṇapati Upaṇisad, this text likens Gaṇesha to the primordial vibration of Om, signifying his interconnectedness with all things.

This famous Vedic text begins with a special Gaṇesha shanti (peace) mantra and includes the Gaṇesha Gayatri as well as the popular mantra om gam ganapataye namaha.

One of my favorite verses invokes Gaṇesha as a protector.

“ Protect the speaker of the mantra. Protect whoever hears this mantra. Protect the giver of this knowledge. Protect the one who upholds this knowledge. Protect the student. Protect from the west. Protect from the east. Protect from the north. Protect from the south. Protect from above. Protect from below. Protect me from all around, all calamities”

Upon completion of the course, we'll do a 10-day chanting sādhana beginning on September 13, in alignment with Ganesha Chaturthi, a festival calling in the energy of Ganesha for good luck and protection.

Chanting this mantra during this time is especially powerful. Astrologically, this festival is positioned to call in Gaṇesha's energy (clearing obstacles) before the Ancestor Fortnight and Navaratri, where we have great opportunity to heal and clear our various karmas.

I’ll be offering a group practice each day of the 10-day festival for anyone who would like to chant together, as well as providing a link for the practice my teacher, Shantala Sriramaiah leads online with hundreds of people around the world.

Familiarity with the Sanskrit alphabet and the foundational principles of Vedic chanting are required for this course.
